A driveway can be laid at most times of year, but the surface you've chosen has a clear preference. For resin and tarmac in particular, warmth and a dry spell make a real difference to the finish. Here's how the seasons affect each one.
The short answer: late spring to early autumn
For resin or tarmac, roughly May to October is the sweet spot — milder temperatures, longer dry windows and ground that's easier to work. Block paving and gravel are far less weather-dependent and go down happily year-round. The main catch is demand: the summer months book up first.
Resin — warmth and dry
Resin cures through a chemical reaction, and that reaction needs warmth to set cleanly. Laid too cold, it stays tacky longer than it should; catch rain before it's cured and the finish can bloom or lift. As a rule we want dry ground, no rain in the window, and temperatures comfortably above 5°C — which is why summer and early autumn suit it well.
It doesn't need a heatwave. A dry, mild autumn day is fine; a cold, damp one isn't. We work to the forecast rather than just the date in the diary.
Tarmac — laid hot, finished in the dry
Tarmac is laid hot and rolled while it's still workable. In cold, wet conditions it stiffens faster and is harder to compact to a sealed, true finish, so while it can go down for much of the year, it's at its best from spring through autumn. Dry ground also makes for a cleaner dig and a firmer base.
Quick season guide
Resin & tarmac: best late spring to early autumn (dry, mild). Block paving: any time of year. Gravel: any time of year. Winter isn't off the table for any of them — it just needs the right weather window.
Why summer books up
Because the warmer months are the best window, they fill quickly. If you'd like the work done over summer, it's worth getting on the books in late winter or early spring. Booking the site visit early also gives us time to plan the job around your preferred window.
What about winter?
Winter is fine for block paving and gravel, and groundwork carries on in most conditions. For resin and tarmac we pick a dry, milder spell rather than laying into frost or rain. We won't rush a surface down in the wrong weather just to hit a date — it isn't worth it for the finish.
In short
Lean towards summer and autumn for resin and tarmac, treat block paving and gravel as all-year, and book early if you have a summer deadline in mind. If you're not sure what suits your project or timeline, get in touch and we'll work it out with you.
