Looking after a new driveway

A well-built driveway is designed to be low-maintenance, but a little routine care keeps it looking good for years. None of it is hard work — most of it is just staying on top of the basics.

Keep it clear

The most useful habit is simply keeping the surface clear of debris. Leaves, moss and organic matter left to sit will stain and, over time, encourage weeds and slippery growth. A quick sweep now and then — especially in autumn — does most of the work.

An occasional wash

A rinse with a hose, or a gentle power-wash once or twice a year, lifts general grime and keeps the colour fresh. Keep the pressure sensible and the nozzle moving. On block paving, go easy around the joints so you don't strip the sand.

Stay on top of weeds

Seamless surfaces like resin and tarmac give weeds very little to root into, so it's mostly about keeping the edges clear. Block paving has joints, so the odd weed is normal — pull them early and top up the jointing sand occasionally to keep the joints tight.

Deal with spills promptly

Oil, fuel and paint are best dealt with straight away rather than left to soak in. A little washing-up liquid and warm water handles most fresh spills; the sooner you get to it, the cleaner it lifts.

Through the seasons

Autumn: clear leaves before they stain. Winter: use grit rather than harsh rock salt where you can, and clear standing debris. Spring: a wash and a weed check. Summer: a quick rinse is usually all it needs.

A note per surface

Resin: sweep, rinse and keep the edges clear — it won't crack or need resealing. Tarmac: keep it clear of standing water and weeds; an occasional reseal every few years keeps it looking rich. Block paving: top up the jointing sand and relay any block that settles. Gravel: a rake to keep it level and a top-up of stone every few years.

If something's not right

If you spot a problem — a stain that won't shift, a dip, a stubborn patch — get in touch. It's usually worth a call before it turns into a bigger job.
